Prof. David Silk
MD FRCP
Professor David Silk is one of the world's pre-eminent Gastroenterologists. Qualifying at Guy's Hospital in 1968, David Silk became Consultant Gastroenterologist at Central Middlesex Hospital in 1978 and was awarded a personal chair at Imperial College, London in 2002. He is now based in the Academic Department of Surgery, St Mary's Hospital, London. He has run a private practice in Harley Street since 1978.
David Silk covers all aspects of Gastroenterology and Clinical Nutrition, specialising in disorders of gastrointestinal function, particularly Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Inflammatory Bowel Disease (Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis) and malabsorption.
During his long career in medicine, David Silk has made a significant contribution to medical research in the areas of Clinical Nutrition, Inflammatory Bowel Disease and IBS, publishing over 290 papers and authoring and contributing to over 70 books including "Nutritional Support in Hospital Practice" 1983 (Blackwell Scientific Publications Ltd) and "Understanding Your Irritable Bowel" 2001 (SCS, Battle).
Since 1992 he has run the IBS Research Appeal, a charitable research programme founded to raise funds for research into IBS. This is very much an ongoing concern and includes the quarterly publication of the IBS Newsletter and provision of information through the Appeal’s website at www.ibsresearchupdate.org. He is currently Chairman of the Centre for Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Princess Grace Hospital, London
